Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we talked about a Chinese song. Today, we will talk about Chinese money.

qián                         xiàn jīn
  (money)                (cash)

yìng bì                     zhǐ bì
    (coin)           (paper money)

Ok, let’s talk about the money used in China now.

rén mín bì
(renminbi, is the official currency of China. The official abbreviation is CNY, also commonly abbreviated as "RMB".)

yuán / kuài
/    (In spoken Chinese, "yuan" is often called as "kuai" sign: ¥, the basic unit of the renminbi (=10 jiao/mao; or 100 fen))

jiǎo / máo
/   (In spoken Chinese, "jiao" is often called as "mao".
a fractional unit of money in China (=1/10 of a yuan or 10 fen))

fēn
(The smallest denomination of the RMB (=1/100 of a yuan or 1/10 jiao or mao))

The paper denominations include100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 yuan; 5, 2 and 1 jiao; and 5, 2 (rare) and 1 fen(rare).

The denominations of coins of RMB are 1 yuan; 5, 2 and 1 jiao; and 5, 2 and 1 fen. The smallest denomination of RMB is the 1 fen.

Fen-denomination RMB is mostly used at supermarkets.

1 Yuan = 10 Jiao (Mao); 1 Jiao = 10 Fen.

Ok, that is all for today.
