Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we learned the difference between “侯”and“候” in Chinese. Today, we will learn the difference between “折”and“拆”in Chinese.

zhé/ zhē /shé 
   (polyphonic word)

1.   shé
 

Verb:

1)   break; snap

shù zhī zài jī xuě de zhòng yā xià tú rán shé le.
       在积                      了。
(The branch snapped under all that snow.)

duì bù qǐ,  wǒ bù xiǎo xīn bǎ nǐ de diào yú gān nòng
    ,                      竿    
shé le.

(I’m sorry to broke your fishing rod.)

2)   lose money in business

tā bǎ nà pī huò shé běn mài diào le.
  那批                     .
(He sold all of those goods at a loss.)

2.   zhé
 

Verb:

1)   break; fracture; snap

zhé duàn shù zhī
              (Break a branch)

2)   lose

sǔn bīng zhé jiàng
              (suffer heavy casualties)

péi le fū ren yòu zhé bīng
              
(throw the helve after the hatchet; throw the handle after the axe; lose the bait along with the fish; give one's enemy a wife and lose one's soldiers as well; lose one's wife as well as one's soldiers -- to pay a double penalty; suffer a double loss;)

3)   turn back; change direction

tā zǒu dào mén kǒu yòu zhé huí lái le.
                           来了。
(She turns back at the gate.)

4)   be convinced; be filled with admiration

tā de bó xué lìng wǒ zhé fú.
               .
(I was overawed by his great knowledge.)

5)   amount to; convert into

              bǎ rén mín bì zhé chéng měi yuán
                                       
              (convert Renminbi yuan into dollars)

6)   fold

bǎ yī fú zhé dié le shōu qǐ lái.
            来。
(Fold these clothers and put them away.)

Noun:

1)   discount; rebate

rú guǒ nǐ néng lì jí fù kuǎn, gěi nǐ dǎ 9 zhé.
         立即付    款,  折。
(If you can pay immediately give you 10% off.)

2)   booklet; folder; deposit book

cún zhé
     (Booklet; deposit book)

chāi
 

1.   tear open; take apart

chāi kāi xìn
        (Open a letter)

2.   pull down; dismantle; unknit

chāi fang zi
         (pull down a house)

chāi qiáo
       (dismantle a bridge)

bǎ jiù máo yī chāi le chóng xīn zhī yī xià
                       
(unravel an old sweater and reknit it)

Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we learned the difference between “” and “” in Chinese. Today, we will learn the difference between “侯”and“候” in Chinese.

1.   princes and marquises; the nobility

          jūn hóu
              (marquis)

2.   a nobleman or a high official

hóu mén sì hǎi
          (A rich man's mansion is difficult of access.; A nobleman's mansion is deep like the sea -- inaccessible.)

3.   a surname

1.   wait, await

gōng hòu
        (await respectfully)
qǐng shāo hòu yī huǐ'er.
                儿。(Please wait a moment.)

2.   send one's regards

wèn hòu
      (greetings, send one’s regards)

3.   time; season

qì hòu                   
  (climate)      

shí hòu
    (Time)

nǐ shén me shí hòu yǒu kòng?
                      空?(when are you free?)

4.   condition; state

          huǒ hòu
              
          (duration and degree of heating, cooking, smelting, ect.
            Or a crucial moment)

          tā bǎ chā zi chā jìn ròu lǐ, jiǎn chá yī xià huǒ
                           
          hòu gòu bù gòu.
                      .
          (He sank his fork into the meat to see if it was 
           well cooked.)
