Chinese Language Learning Program Lesson 136 – How to use “cái才” and “jiù 就” to make Chinese sentences?

Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we talked about how to use “ba ” to make Chinese sentences. Today, we will talk about how to use “cái” and “jiù ” to make Chinese sentences?.

“cái” and “jiù ” are both adverbs used to describe a verb or an action.

1.   cái
  (not until; as late as)

to express when something happened later than expected.

Subject + Time + (cái)  + Verb

tā zuó tiān wǎn shàng 12 diǎn zhōng cái huí lái.
                    12                    来。
(Last night he didn’t come home until 12 o’clock.)

wǒ men bā diǎn shàng kè, kě shì tā bā diǎn bàn cái lái.
                                        来。
(We start class at eight o’clock, but he didn’t come until eight half.)

jiù
(already, as early as)

is used to express when something happened earlier than expected.

Subject + Time + (jiù)+ Verb + (le)

tā zuó tiān wǎn shàng 7 diǎn zhōng jiù huí lái le.
                     7                   了。
(Last night he came home at 7 o’clock.)

wǒ de mèi mei shí wǔ suì jiù shàng dà xué le.
                                 了。
(My younger sister went to college when she was only fifteen.)

2.   (cái)  is used to express something happened just recently or just a moment ago.

tā cái lái.
  来。(He has just arrived.)

(jiù) is used to express something happens just a moment.

wǒ zuò wán gōng zuò jiù lái.
                       来。
(I’ll come when I finish my work.)

3.   (cái) is used to express only, just

wǒ zǒng gòng cái mǎi le 3 jiàn yī fú.
                    了  衣服。
(I only bought 3 dresses.)

(jiù) is used to express only.

zhè jiàn shì jiù nǐ zhī dào.
             道。
(Only you know about this.)

4.   (cái) can be used with (jiù) in the sentence.  cái (just, only) is placed before time and means “it’s early”.

         Time + (cái) + Time + Subject + (jiù) + Verb +(le)

xiàn zài cái 6 diǎn, nǐ jiù kē shuì le?
                  6   点,你        了?
(It’s only 6pm now, you are already sleepy.)

Ok, that is all for today.

xiè  xiè!
    ! (Thanks!)

xià  cì  jiàn
     !  (See you next time!)
