Lesson 173 – polyphonic characters from conversation 2


Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we learn conversation2 from the Chinese movie—不见不散 ( bú jiàn bú sàn). Today, we will learn several polyphonic characters from conversation 2.

duō yīn zì
      (Polyphone; polyphonic characters)

hái
  (adverb. Still, yet, even more, still more)

nǐ wèi shé me hái zài zhè lǐ a?
                里啊?
(Why are you still here?)

hái chà 10 tiān, wǒ jiù 28 suì le.
      10  天,    28 了。
(I will be 28 years old in 10 days.)

wǒ hái méi bǎ yī fú xǐ wán ne.
         衣服洗      呢。
(I did not finish washing clothes yet.)

tā hái shì nà yàng, yī diǎn dōu méi biàn.
        样,                变。
(He is still like he was, did not change at all.)

huán
  (go back, give back,  return, pay back)

fǎn lǎo huán tóng
             (rejuvenate in old age)

guān fāng shuō zhè cì fēi jī shī shì wú yī rén shēng huán.
                   次飞                       还。
(Officials said there were no survivors of the plane crash.)

néng jiè gěi wǒ shí yuán qián ma? wǒ xià gè yuè hái nǐ.
                           ?               你。
(Can you please lend me 10 yuan? I will pay you back
next month.)

yǐ qí rén zhī dào, huán zhì qí rén zhī shēn.
以其        ,                  身。
(deal with a man as he deals with you)

yǐ yǎn huán yǎn, yǐ yá huán yá.
           ,         牙。
(An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.)

wǒ qù le tú shū guǎn, bāng nǐ bǎ shū huán le.
   去了         馆,                  了。
(I went to the library and returned your books.)

hún
  (muddy; turbid)

zhè ge hú lǐ de shuǐ hún zhuó.
                 . (浑浊)
(The lake's water is turbid.)

hùn
  (mix; confusepass forpass off as; muddle along; drift along; get along with sb.)

1.    mix; confuse; mingle

bǎ shuǐ huò miàn fěn hùn zài yī qǐ.
                         在 一 起。
(Mix water and flour together.)

bù yào bǎ zì yóu yǔ fang zòng hùn wéi yī tán.
      把自                         谈。
(Don't confuse liberty with overindulge.)

tā hùn jìn rén qún lǐ jiù bù jiàn le.
                 了。
(He mingled with the crowd, and was lost to sight.)

2.    muddle along; drift along

wǒ bù xiǎng hùn rì zi, wǒ xiǎng zuò diǎn gèng
             日子,                     
yǒu yì yì de shì qíng.
  意义      情。
(Instead of rushing at life, I wanted something more meaningful.)

tā xiàn zài hùn dé bǐ wǒ hǎo.
               好。
(He's doing better than I am.)

 rì zi yī tiān tiān guò qù, tā zài yě hùn bù xià qù le.
日子一             ,              去了.
(As time went by, he could live no longer.)

tā kào dāng yì shù jiā lái miǎn qiáng hùn kǒu fàn chī.
                                          吃。
(He almost manages to scrape a living as an artist.)

gōng zuò suǒ fù yǔ wǒ men de bù zhǐ shì hùn kǒu fàn chī.
                                          吃。
(Work does much more for us than just giving us a living.)

3.    pass for; pass off as

yú mù hùn zhū
          (pass off fish eyes as [for] pearls)

zhè lǐ mài de zhū bǎo shǒu shì zhēn wěi chōng chì, yú
                                           , 
mù hùn zhū de liè zhì pǐn bù shǎo.
                      少。
(Some Jewelry selling here are true, and some are false, and there are a lot of bad quality jewelry.)

4.    get along with sb.

wǒ tóng tā men hùn de tǐng shú de.
                            的。
(I am quite familiar with them.)
