Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we talked about the difference between “fān qié” and “xī hóng shì” in Chinese. Today, we will talk about the difference names for the same family members in Chinese.

bà ba                          fù qīn
  (Dad)               (Father)

diē diē                         mā ma
   (dad, father)       (Mom)

mǔ qin                        niáng
    (Mother)             (mom, mother)

yé ye / zǔ fù                                   
祖父(grandpa in dad’s side)  

nǎi nai / zǔ mǔ                                     
    /    (grandma in dad’s side) 

lǎo ye / wài zǔ fù
   /    (grandpa in Mom’s side)

lǎo niáng / lǎolao
         /    (grandmother in Mom’s side)

wài zǔ mǔ
     (grandmother in Mom’s side)

qī zi / lǎo pó / tài tài / nèi rén
妻子    /    (wife)         
               
ài rén                   lǎo gōng /  zhàng fū
(lover)                 /         (husband)

nán rén
    (man, husband)

nǚ'ér                            guī  nǚ
(daughter)            (girl, daughter)

yuè fù / yuè zhàng
   /         (father-in-law, wife’s father)   

yuè mǔ / zhàng mǔ niáng
      /                 (mother-in-law; wife’s mother)       

pó po
  (mother-in-law; husband’s mother)

gōng gōng
           (father-in-law; husband’s father)

Today’s idiom is:

jiā yù hù xiǎo
      (make known to every family; be known to every household; be well-known to every household)
