Lesson 124 – Chinese Question Words

Hello, everyone. Welcome back. This is Baixue’s Chinese Language Learning Program. Last time we talked about Chinese Negatives. Today, we will talk about  Chinese Question Words.

  

We talked about a question word “吗” before. This “吗” can make a sentence to a question sentence by at the end of the sentence. But I have to say that there are some question words in Chinese that can be added to a sentence to form some question sentences. However, these sentences containing question words cannot also contain 吗 ma.

Ok, let’s see some examples.

shén me

什   么 (what)

zhè ge shì shén me?

  这  个  是     什   么？ (What is this?)

nǐ shén me shí hòu lái wǒ jiā wán’er?

你    什   么   时    候  来  我  家   玩  儿？

(When will you come to my house to play?)

wèi shé me?

  为   什   么？(why)

wèi shé me tiān shì lán sè de?

  为   什   么   天   是  蓝   色 的？(Why is the sky blue?)

nǐ wèi shé me zǒng ná wǒ kāi wán xiào ne?

你  为    什  么     总   那  我  开    玩    笑   呢？

(Why do you always make fun of me? )

nǎ xiē

 哪  些 (which; what (plural))

nǎ xiē shū shì nǐ de ne?

哪  些    书   是 你 的  呢？

(What books are yours?)

nǎ xiē rén huì yòng zhè yàng de gōng jù ne?

 哪 些   人   会     用    这     样    的    工    具  呢？

(Who will use this kind of tool?)

nǎ ge

 哪 个？(which (singular))

nǐ yào xuǎn nǎ ge?

你  要     选    哪 个？(Which one will you pick?)

nǎ ge shì jì gěi lǎo shī de?

哪  个  是 寄  给 老   师  的？

(Which one will be sent to the teacher?)

nǎ lǐ

哪 里 (where)

nǐ shì nǎ lǐ rén?

你  是  哪 里 人？(Where are you from?)

wǒ bù zhī dào tā cóng nǎ lǐ nòng lái le yī zhǐ yě māo.

 我  不  知   道  他    从   哪 里   弄   来 了一  只  野   猫。

(I do not know where he got a wild cat.)

nǎ'er

 哪儿 (where)

nǐ zài  nǎ'er ne?

你 在    哪儿 呢？(Where are you?)

nǐ bǎ shū fàng nǎ'er le?

你 把   书    放    哪儿 了？(Where did you put the book?)

shuí

  谁 (who, whom)

nà gè chuān hóng sè yī fú de nǚ hái ér shì shuí ya?

那  个     穿        红   色 衣服  的 女  孩  儿  是    谁  呀？

(Who is that girl in red dress?)

shuí de

   谁  的 (whose)

zhè ge shì shuí de zì xíng chē?

  这  个  是    谁   的自    行   车？

(Whose bike is this?)

zěn me yàng

  怎  么    样 ？(how; how about)

nǐ zuì jìn zěn me yàng?

你 最  近   怎   么    样？(How have you been?)

zěn me

 怎   么 (how)

zěn me huì zhè yàng?

  怎   么  会    这   样？(How could this happen?)

duō shǎo?

  多    少  (how much; how many)

yī gòng yǒu duō shǎo gè rén huì lái?

一   共     有    多     少    个   人   会  来？

(How many people will come?)

duō jiǔ?

  多  久 (how long; how often)

nǐ duō jiǔ dǎ yī cì wǎng qiú?

你   多  久 打 一 次    网    球？

(How often do you play tennis?)

zhè chǎng bào yǔ chí xù le duō jiǔ?

  这      场     暴   雨  持   续了   多   久？

(How long this storm will last?)

duō cháng shí jiān?

  多      长      时  间 (how long)

hái yào duō cháng shí jiān wǒ men cái néng dào xiāng gǎng?

 还   要    多      长      时  间   我    们    才    能      到     香        港？

(How long will it take to get to hong kong?)

 jǐ gè / measure words

几 个/ 头, 条, 张……. (how many)

nǐ yǒu jǐ gè píng guǒ?

你  有  几个   苹     果？(How many apples do you have?)

zhè běn shū yǒu duō shǎo yè? / jǐ yè?

  这   本    书    有   多      少   页？/ 几页？

(How many pages does this book have?)
